Have You Read the Book Memoirs of a Geisha?

I have a really weird question...

In the book, when Chiyo/Sayuri goes to the hairdresser and while getting her hair styled, the hairdresser says that there's a piece of red fabric placed between the split peach for a reason (like when a man is looking behind her, thinking naughty thoughts), and then when Chiyo figures it out, she blushes. What does it mean? I still don't get it!

Thanks.

I believe it is a reference to the vagina, or virginity (associated with blood)

Heard a lot about it, though, never got the chance to read it. Also, the movie is coming out soon.
